The border crossing into Canada via Sault Ste. Marie was
uneventful; did not even have to take off helmets (I suspect we will on the way
back). After finding our lodging for the night we headed back downtown to check
out the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre (CBHC) and dinner. The downtown area
was surprisingly quiet for a Monday even though it was only 2:00 in the
afternoon. I did find out that the weekend was pretty busy with several
different outdoor activities so perhaps the locals partied themselves out.
The CBHC is a non-profit organization dedicated to the
collection, preservation, restoration and display of historic bushplanes and
forest fire management equipment. The CBHC is located in the historic Ministry of
Natural Resources Hangar, which was home to the Ontario Provincial Air Service
(OPAS). The OPAS was established in 1924 to protect Ontario’s forest resources.
The original hangar, built in 1924, was incorporated into a new hangar built in
1948 to house a growing OPAS fleet.
Exhibits from the CBHC….binge on.
