Bags are packed, the plant watering scheduled has been
covered with Steve, the cable/internet has been turned off….we’re off!
First night is Panguitch Utah at the Purple Sage Motel;
small, clean and easy walking distance to several choices for dinner. Along the
way to dinner that evening we walked by a statue/park like area dedicated to
the Panguitch Quilt Walk of 1864.
According to the story the snow was so deep one winter that a group of seven men put their collection of quilts on the ground in front of them to walk on to keep moving through the area in order to rescue their families.

We have reservations for the July 4th weekend at
the Harwood/Benyi B & B in Alpine Utah. This lovely establishment located
at the base of the Timpanogos Mountains is run by my sister Trish
and
her husband/grill master/rock star Joe.
Dinner on the 4th was a collection of the best
one-pounder steaks, which Joe grilled to perfection, plus an assortment of
salad stuffs. Next time you are at the store see if you can’t find a brand of
pickles from Famous Dave’s Bar-b-que – just enough “zing” to keep you
interested! After dinner girlfriend Melinda and Trish set up their fireworks display
in the street out front to entertain the neighborhood kids plus we were also
able to see quite the show going on at the Alpine City Park. There were so many
fireworks being set off around the park that the next day city officials sent
an email to residents advising that the following night’s show was cancelled
due to the amount of trash generated the night before.
Before I forget I want to share with you this pic of a
Temple perched on a hill in Manti that we saw on our way up to Alpine.
As we rounded the corner it was one of those “whoaaaa” moments as we looked up and saw this awesome sight with the early morning sun shining in the background. The building seemed to glow. What’s even more amazing is Manti only has a population of 3,071 residents to support this most beautiful building!

In between all the gabbing & catching up we managed to
squeeze in a viewing of the Formula 1 race from Austria and the new Tarzan
movie. While the race had a surprise ending the Tarzan story was pretty
predicable. Tarzan & Jane did not actually have much dialog but they were
easy on the eyes. However, Samuel L Jackson was totally out of place in terms
of both role and acting style. I kept waiting for him to turn to Tarzan and ask
him “what’s in your loin cloth.”
August 25, 2016 is the 100th anniversary of the
creation of the National Park Service so after breakfast and catching up with girlfriend Ann and her sister Mary, I
decided to celebrate the occasion by getting my own Senior Pass at the
Timpanogos Cave National Monument. The Timpanogos Cave system, located at 6,730
ft above sea level, is one of 13 sites in Utah managed by the NPS. To get to
the actual cave you need to hike the 1.5 mile steep trail. The cave trail can
be used for hiking when the cave is open, even if you don’t intend to take a
tour.
Time to move on…heading north & east through Idaho with
a route through the north portion Yellowstone NP to Red Lodge Montana. Along
the way we will ride the Beartooth Highway.
